Ugly Unicorn Rainbow Madness By Rampage Toys...

Rampage Toys has just released a whole slew of Ugly Unicorns and other custom toys this past weekend in their online shop and all I can say is WOW! The Rainbow Hair Ugly Unicorn comes from an edition of 5 and the contrast between the brightly colored hair and monotonous body makes this piece so much fun to look at! I just have to say this is my favorite Ugly Unicorn of all time as it literally just POPS! Another Ugly Unicorn that was just released is from a collaboration with Paul Kaiju and comes from an edition of 5 as well. It kind of makes me think of what a zombie Ugly Unicorn might look like with the use of the gangrene green and the zombie eyes. I also saw this RxH Mutant custom was just put up as well and the color pattern used with the intricate detailing is just AMAZING. If you are interested in picking any of these up please head on over to the Rampage Toys Store HERE.

Splurrt Ugly Unicorn Exclusive Series

Splurrt has been working closely with Jon Malmstedt of Rampage Toys lately on a few cool toy projects. These are Splurrt's exclusive custom Ugly Unicorns:

Is the Ugly Uniorn crazy, angry, extra hungry for cupcakes? Who knows, but one thing is for sure, he's uglier than ever.
I've sculpted the pupils and tongues onto every Ugly Unicorn by hand using epoxy resin. Every expression is 1-of-a-kind, They are finished with air brush sprays.

You can purchase the Splurrt Ugly Unicorns here.

RAMPAGE x Imps and Monsters MANOTAUR sofubi: in WAX!

Manotaur WAX!, originally uploaded by rampage.toys.
Jon Malmstedt sends us word from Japan- another project in the works! This is the Manotaur figure he's creating with Justin Hillgrove of Imps and Monsters- a SWEET sculpt if I do say so myself. In terms of the progression of how a vinyl toy is created, it needs to be molded in clay, and then wax. The clay is "waxi-fied", and the wax was at the mold maker as of the 21st of Ferbruary, meaning this project is well underway! The official release is scheduled for the weekend of Emerald City Comic Con - Seattle's Comic Con - starting March 29th. There will be blanks up first, and a really small batch of RAMPAGE handpaints as well.

After the event, anything left will go in the Imps and Monsters site (http://www.impsandmonsters.com/3dstuff.html), and I think Justin might be offering a pre-order now as well. Blanks will retail for $65 - painted versions pricing TBD. You can also follow that link to read the backstory on the Manotaur.

Jon says: Following the initial release of blanks and handpaints, we will be having masks made, and regular runs will be painted in (generally) simple masked paint schemes - with one-offs from Both Justin and myself and RAMPAGE micro-runs on occasion. You can expect some teaming up of the Manotaur and the Ugly Unicorn.

Pictures of the monster, 8 inch Wax Proto can be found on Jon's Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/27483582@N00/

Glitter Waniphants!, originally uploaded by rampage.toys.
Jon sends us images from Japan- some wild custom paint work he did on the Waniphant platform.

Here's what Jon says:
Here's a collaboration with my buddy Shane in Australia. Shane might be known to you as "Hints and Spices" - the creative genius behind the Waniphant Sofubi toy!
This super fun figure was cast in super glittery glitter vinyl!
Pika Pika!
I painted five of these (using a broad array of clear sprays, and some handpaint work). They will be available in the RAMPAGE BigCartel this Friday - Evening EST. Check out the blog, or join the mailing list for updates!

RAMPAGE x Splurrt Guardian Daemon Cadaver Kids

Hello!, originally uploaded by rampage.toys.

I think these were released on Thursday night, Japan time. The Rampage Toys shop says they're sold out. I guess... you can't sleep on Rampage Toys releases. It would be beneficial for you, if you're a fan, to follow the Rampage Toys Flickr account, where WIP projects are posted prior to their release in the shop. Jon's making some seriously crazy-looking toys over there in Japan.

WIP pics for Rampage Toys x Imps and Monsters Sofubi: The Manotaur

Friend and toymaker Jon Malmstedt (Rampage Toys) sends us this REALLY exciting work-in-progress image of a new sofubi he will be helping produce locally in Tokyo: The Manotaur. Designed and sculpted by Justin Hillgrove (Imps and Monsters), this awesome 8-inch Japanese soft vinyl toy will be made in limited colorway runs. The aim is to debut the toy at Justin's booth at the Emerald City ComicCon in Seattle in the spring.

"The Manotaur roams the world in search of something he can’t quite remember. In fact, ever since he invited that fire spirit into his head he’s had trouble concentrating on little other than catering to his countless neuroses and consuming anything with the word “gummy” in the description. In any case, he’s pretty sure he’s forgetting something really important..."

Here's the illustration upon which this character is based:

Rampage Toys Original Ugliness & Army of Brightnesss Ugly Unicorns

"Original Ugliness" Ugly Unicorn by Rampage Toys
Word from Jon Malmstedt comes to us from far away: he has fallen into a regular routine of releases now that he is living in Japan and making hjis own vinyl toys! Here's his two latest message regarding his next two Ugly Unicorn releases:

Hey Toy People!

Time for another UGLY UNICORN release update!  This time around it's pieces that I painted up for Design Festa in Tokyo on November 12th and 13th (this coming weekend).  I'll be in booth I-300 with Datadub (Don) and Refreshment Aya - both will be selling other AWESOME sofubi toys!  I did 2 runs for the event (one micro, and one slightly larger), and I plan on having quite a few other items (will update the Flickr later this week).  Anything leftover after the event will be available to my Ugly Unicorn Mailing list first (joined by e-mailing me), and any left from that will go in the shop.

Anyway, here are the two runs!

1) "Original Ugliness" micro-run:  The Ugly Unicorn takes his original form!  Mixed parts (yellow and white vinyl) with lots of rub/spray action.  Who needs original sin, when you've got original ugliness?!?!? Micro Run of 5 pieces, outfitted with some of the original header cards (from the blank vinyl pre-order).

2) "Army of Brightness" Ugly Unicorns!  8+ layers of spray/masking, and some super work-intensive screen printed header cards are what you get with each of these figures.  Largest Ugly Unicorn run yet - 10 pieces!

Jon Malmstedt is, as I type this, painting up this set of 10 clear vinyl Ugly Unicorn figures as an Exclusive for our NYCC booth! You will be able to pick one up at Booth 876 for only $42.

The actual colorways are, as of now, a secret! So you'll have to wait for a full reveal. In the meantime, revel in the crystalline beauty of this clear Japanese soft vinyl.

How are Japanese soft vinyl toys (sofubi) made? Watch this video!

Jon Malmstedt, owner of Rampage Toys, goes with his friend Velocitron to a mom & pop mini factory in Tokyo to watch the creation of soft vinyl toys. Velocitron explains to Jon some of the process, and you can watch it with your own eyes... Mysteries revealed!

We are all very excited for the release of the Rampage Toys Ugly Unicorn sofubi, which is in production now! Preorders are currently available in the Rampage Toys shop for the red and yellow colorways. If production proceeds without a hitch, Tenacious Toys will also be selling an exclusive blue colorway at booth 876 at the 2011 New York Comic Con in October.
